Sales is probably one of the most difficult career fields out there but it can also be one of the most lucrative. In fact, if you look at many of the top wage-earners in any industry, most of them are in direct sales. If you are interested in a career in sales but have never sold anything before, you can still be a success at it if you research the field and learn a few tips. Selling Techniques for the Non-Salesperson

Sales is a numbers game so the more people you talk to, the more successful you are likely to be. One of the first rules of selling a product or service involves one basic tip: do not ever take someone’s rejection personally. After all, even the best salespeople hear far more “no”s than they do “yes”s but if you are consistent and stick with it, you are going to get better at it. There are also a few techniques that are good to remember and they include:

  • Be a Consultant:Identify a need in the customer and then suggest a product or service to fulfill that need.
  • Be Prepared:Your audience may change from one event to the next so you have to study your target market and the things that drive your audience. Determine exactly what you are selling so that you will know how to go about selling it to them.
  • Prepare Your Pitch:Converse with the customer as if you are carrying on a regular conversation, watch his or her body language, ask him or her questions, and concentrate on helping him or her rather than selling him or her
  • Learn to Deal with Objections:Approach objections with questions so that you can learn the true and honest concern. Practice beforehand how you will deal with that objection.
  • Ask for the Sale:Regardless of what you are selling, it is good to always ask for the sale; otherwise, the entire presentation will be left hanging and a follow-up will be a lot more difficult.

Learning the Basics of Your Product or Service

It goes without saying that learning everything about the product or service that you are selling is an excellent way to begin your sales career; it is surprising how many salespeople don’t do this. Questions will come up, particularly if your customer is leaning towards a “yes,” and if you do not know the answer to one of the questions, it is better to tell him or her that you will get back to him or her with an answer than to make something up or ignore the question altogether. Learn the difference between a feature and a benefit, make sure that you are familiar with any industry-specific jargon that the potential customer may be using, and, above all else, make sure that you practice your sales techniques until you feel comfortable handling any question or objection that a customer may hand you.
